Montana Folk Festival

Possibly Butte’s most famous, Montana Folk Festival highlights over 200 musicians, dancers and craftspeople. This is one of the largest free outdoor music festivals in the northwest, and you can enjoy it all weekend long, the second full weekend in July. Six stages showcase a wide variety of performers with distinct feelings ranging from intimate stage to impressive amphitheater. Folk Fest focuses on the music, but there’s a lot to enjoy, from the food to the community feel.

An Rí Rá Montana Irish Festival

With a more robust Irish population than any other city or metropolitan area in the country (23.6 percent of Butte residents reported that they had Irish roots on the 2010 census), it makes sense that Butte should celebrate its cultural heritage. The Montana Gaelic Cultural Society puts on this festive appreciation of all things Irish. With music, dance, and education to explore, grab a pint and check out the lineup in August.

Freedom Festival

Celebrate the Fourth of July with a little bit of hoopla at Butte’s annual Freedom Festival. It wouldn’t be Independence Day without a community celebration, after all. Enjoy fireworks on July 3rd, and a parade on July 4th. Check out the pre-firework events and vendors at Chester Steele Park, and then lay your claim to your patch of lawn for the pyrotechnic display.

Covellite International Film Festival

During the month of September, catch over 100 films, shorts, documentaries and features from around the world at the Covellite International Film Festival. You can also check out the array of talks, workshops, and post-screening parties that get you out and about around historic Uptown Butte. The Covellite Theater is housed in the historic Presbyterian Church, built between 1896 and 1897. Now with a 350-seat theater venue and a more intimate bar-style lounge downstairs, you can dive deep into international cinema here.

Silver Bow County Fair

Nothing is more Montana than the county fair. Held at the Butte Civic Center, this family-oriented event brings out the best of local 4-H exhibits, stock judging, and carnival rides. Of course, it wouldn’t be the fair without a healthy helping of funnel cake and a stroll by local vendors to shop for made-in-Montana goods. With the fun held in early August, you’ll want to hit up the fair and stay for a while.
