How Starry Night Lodging is Reducing Its Waste

12/07/2021

Sustainable tourism is the way of the future, and Starry Night Lodging is working to do its part while helping guests focus on their personal sustainability, too. When traveling to explore our planet, we can all help to save it at the same time when we think twice about the waste we create. Here are a few ways Starry Night is reducing its waste in its campgrounds, RV parks, vacation rentals and hotels.

Cutting Down on Food Waste

Free, continental breakfast is one of the greatest waste-creators in the hotel industry. Many of the items provided, like individual serving cups of cereal, come with plastic packaging, and fresh foods like milk and fruit go bad quickly when not eaten by guests in a morning rush. In fact, nearly half the food you see at the breakfast buffet goes to waste. Add on top of that the paper plates and plastic cups and cutlery, and you can see why Highline Adventures has cut this out to benefit the planet. Instead, we encourage our guests to experience a local meal at a nearby cafe or coffee house, helping to invigorate the local economy while trying something new.

Harnessing Solar Energy

Harnessing solar energy is the next step in reducing emissions and embracing clean energy from the sun’s rays. Utilizing solar reduces the waste we see in CO2 emissions that comes from coal and other traditional energy sources. At Highline Adventures, our solar programs have been expanding of late, and we plan to continue implementing more arrays down the line, too. Cutting down on greenhouse gases and cutting out fossil fuel waste will help set us all up for a bright future.

Efficient Lighting

Speaking of bright, lighting can play a role in the waste at a hotel, as well. Highline properties are making the switch to more efficient, LED light bulbs to reduce waste and energy consumption at the same time. LED lights use 75% less energy and can last 25 times longer than incandescent lighting, saving electricity while using fewer bulbs. Guests can also help reduce electricity use by flipping the light switch off when you leave the room, and extend that energy savings even further.

Recycling What We Can

We do all we can at Highline to cut out unnecessary waste. But sometimes the waste we can’t help but create can be repurposed through recycling. It’s estimated that 50-60% of the total waste produced by hotels is recyclable, including food, office paper, cardboard, aluminum cans, and plastic bottles. So, don’t chuck that soda can or paper bag in the trash. Look for recycling bins at Highline Adventures properties and anywhere you travel nearby, helping give metals, papers and plastics a new life away from the landfill.

Ditching Single-Use Plastics

The average hotel guest produces 2.5 pounds of trash per day. Highline Adventures is committed to cutting this number down by making the small changes that really add up. Switching away from individually packaged shampoos and soaps to multi-use dispensers is just the start. Highline Adventures properties also avoid using in-room trash can liners and encourage the use of reusable water bottles with water bottle refill stations in its hotels. Join us in cutting out those unnecessary single-use items, opting instead to reduce by bringing your own reusable toiletry bottles, water bottles and more.
