News Release: Starry Night Acquires Historic Sacajawea Hotel

01/30/2026

Starry Night Lodging and RV has announced the acquisition of the historic Sacajawea Hotel in Three Forks, Montana, marking a significant addition to the company’s growing collection of destination-driven hospitality properties across the state

Built in 1910 and previously owned by the local Folkvord family, the Sacajawea Hotel has long stood as a cornerstone of Southwest Montana history and community life.

Eric Sheckleton, owner of Starry Night Lodging and RV, said the property aligns seamlessly with the company’s mission to preserve authentic Montana places while creating meaningful guest experiences.

“We have tremendous respect for the Folkvord family and the care, vision, and heart they have poured into the Sacajawea Hotel,” Sheckleton said. “It is an honor to take on the responsibility of stewardship, and we are excited to build on that legacy by strengthening our ties to the Three Forks community and working with our amazing team to create unforgettable experiences for generations of guests to come.”

A Natural Fit for the Starry Night Brand

Starry Night Lodging and RV is a Montana-based hospitality company owned by the Sheckleton family of Bozeman. The company owns and operates hotels and RV parks throughout Bozeman, Ennis, Livingston, Gardiner, and Butte, with a focus on preserving distinctive properties that reflect the spirit of Montana while offering thoughtful, modern hospitality.

Originally constructed using materials from the Old Town Hotel and designed in a Southern Plantation-style architecture, the Sacajawea Hotel embodies the kind of historic integrity and sense of place that Starry Night seeks to protect and elevate within its portfolio.

Honoring Seventeen Years of Stewardship

The Sacajawea Hotel was previously owned and operated by the Folkvord family of Three Forks, who acquired the property seventeen years ago. During their ownership, the Folkvords led an extensive revitalization of the hotel, carefully balancing historic preservation with modern upgrades. Their efforts helped reestablish the Sacajawea as a former railroad hotel known for exceptional dining, warm hospitality, and community connection.

Throughout their stewardship, the Folkvord family worked closely with the local historical society to document the hotel’s rich past, including its many owners, challenges, and milestones. Their dedication ensured the Sacajawea’s story remained an essential part of the region’s heritage.

Reflections From the Folkvord Family

Dean Folkvord reflected on the transition with gratitude and pride.

“We leave with our hearts full and our chins held high,” Folkvord said. “Our whole family has been involved in the operation of this property, and we’re proud of what we’ve accomplished together. Along with our staff and dedicated team members, we’ve helped countless families make lasting memories. We’ve made a few ourselves and thank all of the patrons who have enjoyed the beauty and offerings of the old hotel.”

Folkvord also expressed confidence in the hotel’s future under Starry Night’s ownership.

“We’re really excited for the new owners,” he said. “They’re Montanans, they understand Montana hospitality, and they’re eager to be involved in the day-to-day management of the property and to assimilate into the Three Forks community.”

All existing staff members will remain with the hotel, ensuring continuity and a smooth transition for guests and the community.
