Kauai lets you choose your own adventure as a hub of culture, family activities, and outdoor fun. Between the north shore and the south shore, there’s always a new corner of the island to explore. And even on such a small island, you get a different flavor depending on where you stay. Let’s look at how Kauai’s north and south shores compare.
Renowned for its rugged natural beauty and towering winter waves, the north shore of Kauai offers a remote alternative to some of the busier parts of the island. The sacred Nāpali Coast is the most peaceful place on the island, where you’ll find rough cliffs and rugged views. Expect a laid-back, island feel on this part of the island. The views and mountainous shoreline mean you might have more of a hike to get to the beach, depending on where you go.
Those famous north shore waves mean that beginner surfers should head to the south shore for their first lesson. But even just experiencing the ocean’s power from the beach makes a trip to the north shore worthwhile. Nature lovers will feel right at home here. If you do decide to head out for some summer surfing or snorkeling, be sure to stick to beaches with lifeguards, check conditions, and know the basics of beach safety before you head out.
Starry Night’s north shore lodging in Anahola sits right on the ocean, the perfect perch to explore the north shore. The Aliomanu Sunrise Bungalow gives you a comfortable getaway to reconnect and feel refreshed. One of the most relaxing and awe-inspiring activities is sitting in the back deck and watching the waves crash out past the reef.
On the south shore, you’ll find more reliable weather year round, ideal for families spending time in the water with kids. It’s more protected from the elements and the area is well known for its beaches, so snorkeling and swimming are an easy option throughout the year. Some of our favorites:
Po'ipū Beach Park - family friendly fun
Shipwreck Beach - stunning spot, but not recommended for snorkeling
Kukuiula Harbor - sandy beach with swimming and fishing
The south shore is also a bit more populated, so you can find shopping, dining, and other activities like zip lining. The south shore has more of a resort vibe, since that’s where most of the island’s commercial development is. That being said, Kauai’s famous Waimea Canyon is most easily accessible from the south shore, and a trip to the island wouldn’t be complete without a drive through the aptly nicknamed Grand Canyon of the Pacific.
The Kauai Pane vacation home by Starry Night Lodging is the perfect entree into Kauai’s south shore. Located in the community of Poipu, this four bedroom, three bath rental is just a block from the beach, perfect for families and gatherings of friends ready to explore the island.
The good news is, even if you want to venture to every part of the island, it’s easy to drive from one side to the other in an hour. If you’re not sure which area is more your speed, you can always split the difference with a stay in one of Starry Night Lodging’s cottages on the east shore. It’s an easy jumping-off point to all of Kauai. Reserve your stay, and experience the Garden Isle.
